Results of the project

All PWCoE project was divided into 7 Work Packages (WP's).


  • IS researchers during the visit to TWI found information about following issues:
    • initiation of collaboration with industrial partners in UK and worldwide,
    • research activity within European projects (6PR: CRAFT, Collective Research, etc.),
    • actions with the aim of the best exploitation of possibilities of structural funds,
    • right organisational division of TWI in order to increase the effectiveness of research activity and establishing of new contact,
    • tools for knowledge management and transfer (internet database, literature, periodicals, etc.),
  • participation of IS employees in two seminars connected with research project concerning road transport,
  • organisation of the special training seminar by the researchers trained in TWI for IS management, research and marketing personnel in order to pass acquired knowledge,
  • the beginning of modification of IS activity towards strengthening of the links with industry and other research centres in Poland and Europe,
  • working out of the website principles of the model specialised research laboratories with the use of the example studied at TWI, UK,
  • establishing of "new quality" links with industry in Poland in order to present numerous possibilities for research projects offered by European and Structural Funds.


  • organising of two days seminar "Modern weldable materials for power, aerospace and chemical industries" and experts meeting,
  • acquainting of industry representatives and IS researchers with issues concerning welding of the most modern materials applied in aircraft, power and chemical industries,
  • investigation into the possibilities, needs, problems and limitations in aircraft and power industries connected with implementation of innovations and research cooperation,
  • acquainting of industrial representatives with possible risks occurring during welding of modern materials,
  • strengthening of contacts with both research centres and industry,
  • realising of the usefulness and necessarily of joint research in order to increase the level, shortening of the duration and improving of the exploitation of the research results.


  • preparation and conduction of the training concerning technology of nickel based alloys joining,
  • preparation and conduction of the training concerning technology of high strength steels joining,
  • training of selected NDT personnel on basic courses making possible to acquire the highest, level 3 specialisation in NDT:
    • basic course in Lavender International NDT Consultancy Services Ltd - UK,
    • basic course in TÜV Academia, Poland.
  • training of selected NDT on basic courses in order to acquire level 3 specialisation in following testing:
    • ultrasonic (in the sectors of welded joints, forgings and castings sectors),
    • magnetic-particle (in general product testing),
  • increasing of competences of lecturers on NDT courses and courses accredited by EWF,
  • preparation of the lecturers for organisation of new courses enlarging of IS's educational offer. New courses will increase the IS competitiveness.


Within WP4 following courses in welding and allied technologies for welding technologists, operators and welders have been prepared:

  • "Technology of welding of duplex steels" - course for technologists,
  • "Welding of duplex steels" - course for welders (skills improvement),
  • "Laser welding and cutting - possibilities, advantages and conditions for application", course for technologists and designers,
  • "Technology of A-TIG welding" - course for technologists,
  • "Friction seam welding with FSW technology" - course for technologists,
  • "Liquid-penetrant, magnetic-particle, radiographic and ultrasonic testing" - extending of the existing courses programmes by forgings and castings testing,
  • "Heat treatment of welded joints" - course for technologists, supervisors and operators,
  • "Vibratory stabilisation of welded structures" - course for operators
  • "Welding of steels with yield point over 1000 MPa" - course for technologists,
  • "Welding of nickel based alloys" - course for technologists.


  • establishing of new contacts with numerous enterprises, which are the most important for collaboration within research projects,
  • own research project concerning technology of nickel based alloys (corrosion and high-temperature resisting alloys) welding was completed,
  • own research project concerning technology of high-resistant steel (over 1000 MPa) welding was completed,
  • the research potential of numerous R&D centres was investigated. Initial agreement concerning extension of IS research offer was concluded.
  • IS joined scientific and development consortium of Silesian Centre of Advanced Technology,
  • IS has collaborated within the project financed from structural funds "Creation of the regional network of the Silesian Centre of Advanced Technologies"
  • IS has been conducting two research projects financed from Polish funds with participation of European research programmes COST 536 and COST 538,
  • IS has participated in the project financed from structural funds "The network for effective technology commercialisations",
  • IS has begun activities aimed at organisation of technological cluster,
  • IS has participated in the project funded by EC "Strengthening conformity assessment".


During execution of WP6 all planned tasks and aims were fulfilled, including:

  • ENVIWELD and REFRIWELD laboratories creation,
  • Internet website creation and activation on PWCoE website,
  • research procedures development, modification and modernisation through introduction of new methods of research, measuring, recording, analysis and interpretation of results,
  • purchase of new and modernisation of existing research and measuring equipment,
  • establishing of numerous contacts with foreign institutions and collaboration within several international research projects financed from European funds,
  • establishing of numerous contacts with research centres in Poland and enterprises using welding processes thanks to new methods of communication and innovations transfer.

  • 48 lectures were given (4 by representatives of foreign research centres, 25 by IS researchers taking part in PWCoE project, 5 by representatives of technical universities and institutes, 14 by representatives of industry),
  • 400 representatives of industry had an opportunity to acquaint with technological innovations and possibilities of financing of innovation transfer,
  • organisation of technological demonstrations, interactive workshops aimed at presentation of the development in welding technologies,
  • working out and implementation of CRM programme for marketing purposes - the beginning of the modern management and technology transfer system in IS,
  • extension of the area and effectiveness of technological information dissemination with use of CRM possibilities,
  • creation of database of innovative technologies in welding,
  • submission of 2 project proposals concerning modification in communication with industry, knowledge and technology transfer for financing from structural funds.
